Pembroke Cricket Club Newsletters

July newsletter
Hi Everyone,
As it is now July we are entering the busiest time of the year in the club, both on and off the pitch. This newsletter is to highlight the activities off the pitch and I will update the cricket achievements so far in a later mail.
I will mention two teams here though; the men’s firsts are in the semi-final of the ISC and will play Waringstown on Sunday 16th August at home. I am hosting a ‘Sunday Roast’ Lunch before the game and would hope that lots of you can attend. Signup sheets will go up in the club shortly. This is an ideal way to kick off a great days cricket.
The ladies firsts will play North Kildare in the Semi-Final of the Cup on Thursday 16th July at home, with a 6.30pm start. All support welcome and join them afterwards for a celebratory TNS!
Off the pitch there is lots of activity with corporate events in the club and PCC planned events. I would like to stress that the corporate events are vital for the club as they generate much needed revenue which is used to pay bills, coaches, grounds-staff etc and buy equipment. Please remember that you, as a member of the club, can always go to the bar or the Ganley Room to have a tipple during these events.
Ciarian Sharp is hosting the PCC Legends v YMCA legends game tomorrow (Friday) evening. This is always a great game and a fun night. All are welcome to come along. Be aware that there is a large corporate event tomorrow night as well involving the clubs biggest client, so the after cricket fun may be in the Ganley room.
The Fifth XI are having a team night this Saturday in the club and all are welcome to come along. Its billed as a "Hawaiian or a Bad Shirt Night"so come prepared as I will be attending in my latest Hawaiian creation! This is a great idea and I would encourage other teams to take a leaf out of the fifths book and have team bonding nights.
August 1st will see the ‘Comedy and Cocktail’ night in the club. This is a club fund raiser which does exactly what it says on the tin. Comedians will be led by the very talented and funny Aine Gallagher Tickets cost €15.00 each or 4 for € 50.00 and get you entry to the event, a yummy cocktail and entry to the raffle. As this is a major club fundraiser, I would ask that you tell all your pals and attend the event yourselves. Please contact Becca Gallagher for tickets to buy and sell!
On August 8th PCC are hosting an IWCU reunion, where we will see all the ladies who played senior international cricket for Ireland, along with the IWCU administrators and coaches, gathered in Pembroke. We are having a dinner where the players from cap 1 to cap 86 will be presented with a commemorative Cricket Ireland pin with their cap number on it, by President of Cricket Ireland, Murray Power. This will be followed by a hoolie. The dinner is a closed event, however everyone is welcome to attend the pin presentation and the hoolie, with my favourite band, The Country Boys.
Another BIG event happening in August is the attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the highest number of people doing ‘Keepy Uppies’ using a standard cricket bat and ball. We need you to attend this and be part of history.
We are looking for 400 people to take part to set the record on Saturday 22ndAugust in PCC. Please see the event web site; www.cricketwra.com WE NEED YOU!! #BEPARTOFHISTORY #CricketKeepyUppy
We are also looking for sponsorship for this event. If you think you may have a contact for sponsorship please contact Maz Lambert.

The Club Dinner this year is on Friday 4th September in the clubhouse. After an exhausting search to get a guest speaker to follow the very excellent Ciaran Sharp, I have found one. Past PCC member, rugby pundit and radio personality George Hook will entertain us on the night. More details and signup sheets will go up in the club soon.
The last event of the season, The Awards Night is on Saturday 12th September. A bitter sweet night, where we celebrate the season, its achievements and people and also dread the upcoming winter.
Please see the club website, Facebook page and Twitter account for more on these and all the clubs events. Also, keep an eye in the clubhouse for sign-up sheets. As always, best of luck to everyone playing representative cricket at the moment whether it’s for your country, your province or The Brook.
Cheers.
Janice
May Newsletter 2015
Well, we are into the season now and everyone has a couple of matches under their belt with varied success.
Ryan Hopkins has a 78 and Joe Prendergast is the men’s leading wicket taker so far. The ladies are going well and Louise McCarthy had amazing figures against Malahide of 5 for 0 off 4!!!. The youth section are going great guns and have a busy fixtures programme. We are looking for senior members to mentor the girls and boys teams and umpire games if available. Please contact Barry or me if you can help.
Unfortunately the weather has not been brilliant which has affected the cricket, but on the up side the ground is in top notch condition. The seats along the wall have been repaired and the bendy wood replaced many thanks to Noel Gough for his generosity and to Con for all the work. I am confident now that we will all have a splinter free summer!
The planting for the front of the clubhouse and along the wall has also been completed and looks fantastic. You will notice that there is a new flower bed down by the car park wall. This has been dedicated in honour of Frank Malin. Many thanks for all involved with this work, it really enhances the look and the atmosphere of the club and we are indebted to those who make it possible.
The bar area looks fantastic and the hall has been repainted. Thanks to Phillip for making sure the facility is ready for the members. I know he also has a lot of party and corporate events booked in for the summer. Frankly, we would not survive without these events to bring in revenue but, please be aware that PCC members are always facilitated either in the main bar or the Ganley Room, so don’t feel that you cannot come down to your club.
I had great pleasure last weekend hosting a lunch before the first’s game against YM. It was really well attended and an ideal opportunity to honour Andy Balbirnie’s excellent World Cup. We hung a terrific tribute to him over the fireplace in the bar.
I was also delighted to pay tribute to Mary Sharp and the awards she received over the winter. I presented Mary with a photographic momento which I’m delighted to say she has agreed will be hung in the bar.
Please note that your subs are now due. If you are a player, I urge you to arrange to pay now as we will enforce the no pay no play policy after the June bank holiday weekend. As you are all aware we need this income to invest it in the development of cricket and cricketers and for the day to day running of the club. All sub amounts are on the website.
That’s it for now I think. If you would like to get involved in the running of the club or with the ground preparation please let me know.
Cheers
Janice

January Newsletter 2015
Hi All,
Can you believe spring is around the corner? I have noticed that the evenings are getting a smidge brighter but that could be cataracts!!
As I write, the Irish men’s squad are leaving for Australia/New Zealand to participate in the World Cup, with our own Andy Balbirnie in their ranks. We are enormously proud of Andy and his achievements on the cricket pitch. We are proud that he is not only representing himself and his family, but also Pembroke on the world stage. I know you all join me in wishing him all the very best for the tournament and beyond.
In order to capitalise on the hype generated by the guys participation in the World Cup, I am getting a sign made to be placed facing the dart line to say we are open for new members. I would urge you to spread the word amongst everyone you meet that they and their friends can play cricket in PCC. We are open for business!
As you would expect at this time of the year the club is gearing up for the season. Philip is watering his bulbs. Ronan is lovingly clipping his square and indoor nets have started in St Andrews College. Nets are open to all members, please see the Facebook page for details and times.
This season we plan to produce a club brochure. It will contain articles on cricket, articles on our cricket characters, photographs and other interesting titbits. It will also have all the seasons fixtures. We are looking for corporate sponsorship for this and business’s to take adds in this publication. Please contact Philip Byrne if you can help.
Your sub is also now due. You can pay this directly to the club or by direct debit, details on the web site. It is important that we gather this income early so that we can fund vital cricket and facility projects.

There are great plans for the season to come. I plan to hold pre match lunches regularly, with the first one on May 16th. We are replacing the seats along ‘The Wall’ so the risk of a splinter in your ‘lower order’ while watching a match will be a thing of the past!! Paddy Halpin is planning several social events to make sure we don’t get bored off the pitch and the cricket is going to be great. I can’t wait!
I am off to the World Cup on the 21st of Feb and will be attending all the Irish games after that. Keep an eye out for the Pembroke flag on the telly as I will be displaying it with pride.
